Talbot Marketing History
A. Talbot Company was established in 1886 by Mr. M. Alfred Talbot at 382 Clarence Street in London, Ontario (just opposite London's downtown Galleria Mall). The A. Talbot Company specialized in catalogue work of which they turned out all kinds of printing in one, two and three colours. Talbot Company did a large trade in calendars, some of which they made entirely. They also bought large quantities and printed on the advertising matter. In addition, the business also embraced job printing of all kinds. The company had one linotype and one monotype machine, three casting machines, four large cylinder presses, an automatic kelley and three small machines. They did their own binding and in the finishing room, a couple of folding machines were also used.
A. Talbot Company employed between 50 and 60 staff members consisting of pressmen, compositors, finishers, binders, lithotype operator and machine men. In addition to the above undertakings, the company published "The Echo"- a weekly news and advertising paper edited by Mr. A. Talbot.
Alfred Talbot passed away at his residence at 470 King Street in London on June 24th, 1932 at the age of 69 years, at the time of his death he was survived by two married daughters.
The A. Talbot Company was acquired in 1947 by Mr. A.R. Alloway and renamed Talbot Communications on May 26th, 1956, the operation was moved from 382 Clarence Street in London to its' then new plant at 75 Ann Street. The new location was the result of continuous expansion in the field of printing and calendars since 1886 when Mr. Alfred Talbot opened his printing shop. The location at 75 Ann Street gave the company 17,500 square feet of production area. London Mayor, Ray Dennis, heading a group of civic and government officials, cut a ribbon officially opening the new plant at 2:30 p.m. starting a new chapter in the company's growth.
In 1961, Mr. Roy Pollard was hired from competitor, Lawson and Jones and in 1965 Mr. Pollard hired Mr. Ed Deschaine, also from Lawson and Jones as calendar and specialty advertising manager. At that time, the sales staff consisted of approximately 110 individuals, 20 of whom were full time sales agents and the other 80 sold for the company on a part time basis.
In 1984, Talbot purchased the assets of the Lawson and Jones specialty advertising division - a move which doubled the size of both its' sales agent network and annual sales. The purchase was the beginning of a turnaround strategy the success of which became evident over the next few years.
In 1988, Advertising Unlimited, Inc., a large manufacturer of calendars and dated products for the Advertising Specialty Industry in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota acquired the assets of Talbot Communications. Advertising Unlimited, Inc. was a wholy owned division of R.L. Polk co. of Detroit, Michigan.
Upon concluding this acquisition, Advertising Unlimited, Inc. split the operations of Talbot Communications into two distinct units. The manufacturing division was renamed King Craft and remained at 75 Ann Street. The advertising specialty division was renamed Talbot Marketing and moved to its current location 384 Neptune Crescent.Under current management, both companies have more than doubled in size and have also concluded a number of acquisitions.
For the operating years 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2000 and 2003, Talbot Marketing has won the coveted 'Distributor of the Year' award from it's industry association, PPAC (Promotional Products Association of Canada).
Promotional Products Industry
Probably there is not a Canadian living who, at one time or another has not owned and used some piece of merchandise with advertising imprinted upon it. The great majority of Canadians at this very moment undoubtedly have on their persons or in their homes or offices one or more such items. Literally millions of us refer daily to a wall or desk calendar which carries some advertiser's message and jot notes with a ball-point pen which is imprinted with advertising copy upon a memorandum pad that informs us of some advertiser's address and telephone number. Our children do their homework with advertising-imprinted rulers or play with toy balloons that bear some retailers name. In short the promotional product has become an intimate part of our daily lives. One company distributed 6,500,000 promotional products and gifts in a single year. Another distributed 15,700 personal items ,including money clips, tie clasps, and cuff links in one year to assist in the advertising of its products. And it is said that there is produced annually in Canada, a Calendar for every man woman, and child in the population.
